As more Americans take to the roads, skies, rails, and waterways to celebrate our nation’s Memorial Day, the more important it is to be necessarily informed before traveling. It is a fun day of family, friends and outdoor activities that requires some safety precautions. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who died in service to their country. The day honors over 1 million men and women who have died in military service since the Civil War. Let’s honor those soldiers by being aware of these safety factors below, that can save us from any harm.
Don’t Drink and Drive
This one should be the most obvious of all and yet 44% of all traffic fatalities that occur over Memorial Day weekend are alcohol-related. Even if you think you haven’t had that much to drink, please don’t get behind the wheel. If you are a boater this weekend, don’t drink and operate a boat either; it is just as dangerous as driving a car. Uber, Lyft or any taxi service can save many lives on the roads.
Practice Safe Driving
Others on the road may not practice safe driving, so we encourage you to be cautious about your driving, especially on this holiday weekend. Leave in plenty of time to get to where you are going so you are not stressed and rushing. According to the National Safety Council, an estimated 47,000 injuries are from car accidents each Memorial Day weekend. Store your phone in a place where it will not be a distraction. Absolutely no texting, and driving. Be alert and leave adequate room between you and the car in front of you.
Boats are a real blast, and we know Floridians love to be on the water, but there are a couple of important safety tips that can help you steer away from any harm. Know the weather before going out, because getting caught in a storm with blinding rain or rough waves could turn ugly quick. Make sure you have the necessary items including extra fuel, all emergency-required safety equipment, sunscreen, and plenty of flotation devices. Make sure your watercraft has the right boat insurance to keep you more relaxed knowing you are covered in the event of an accident. Be experienced when operating a boat. If you are a beginner, it may not be the best time to take the boat out on this busy weekend.
While the burgers are on the grill and the kids are in the pool having a blast, make sure we pay attention to the hazards that can arise. Watch out for children and pets around the fire and avoid wearing loose clothing that can catch on fire. While the kids are in the pool, make sure there is at least one adult supervising to prevent accidents from occurring. Take some time to prepare your home by installing the proper lighting and keeping walkways and handrails clear for your guests’ safety. Make sure you have the right homeowners insurance to ensure that you and your guests are protected if anyone gets hurt on your property.
